Course overview

Learn business school tactics to gain influence & drive impactful design work

At Airbnb, I experienced the magic that happens when business leaders truly understand Design. What if your stakeholders understood the value of design and empowered you to do the best work of your career?

Describing the ROI of Design gives you tools to break through to business leaders. Through frameworks, lessons, and tactics taught in top business schools, you will develop the skills to articulate and demonstrate the value of your work in a way that resonates with non-designers across all levels of your organization.

As one design leader put it: "The way I talk since your course has completely changed and I’m being heard by everyone! I’m a little bit pleased about winning arguments and creating visibility and understanding of all the awesome work my team and I are doing."

If you want more room to do great work, want leaders to listen to your design rationale, want to be more involved in the product development process, or want to drive more impact as a designer in your organization, this course is for you.

What students are saying

Ryan is extremely helpful in sharing his own experiences to support other designers who have difficulties measuring the impact of their work, getting credit, and gaining influence in their organizations. Very helpful especially if you’re in an organization with lower design maturity.

I joined this course seeking a framework to strengthen my influence and refine my ability to advocate for thoughtful, high-impact design. I’m leaving with practical tactics to connect design to business outcomes and facilitate meaningful change. Ryan’s relevant case studies and approachable teaching style made the experience even more valuable. I highly recommend this course!

This course opened up doors I didn’t even realize were already within my reach. Ryan’s teaching style is not only clear and inspiring, but it also makes you believe in yourself—and that changes everything. What clicked for me wasn’t just the value of design—it was seeing the bigger picture. I went in thinking like a typical designer, focused on pixels and visuals. I came out thinking like a strategist, understanding how to organically build influence, speak the language of business, and apply frameworks that show real impact. One of the biggest highlights for me was how engaging the sessions were. It’s not just a lecture—it's a conversation. Ryan constantly encourages questions and goes out of his way to answer each one with depth, clarity, and often with personal insights. Whether it’s during the live session or even afterward in follow-ups, his commitment to your growth is very real. It’s not an overnight shift—it takes effort to implement everything. But the course lays out a step-by-step path, and that roadmap is priceless.

Education

The tools and frameworks Ryan shared not only helped me feel more confident in conveying my value as a designer, but they empowered me with the language and perspective I've been searching for to actually drive more impact at my company. And I'm not talking about theories that sound nice on the surface but fall apart in the real world. Ryan armed us with strategies and tactics on first session that I was able to start using that week. The course also helped level up my internal leadership compass. Even though I've been utilizing some of the approaches Ryan teaches, I didn't have the tools to analyze where I've been effective and where I can improve – this course changed that. Cannot recommend this enough as an investment in your own career growth.

This course was exactly what I needed. It gave me the tools, and more importantly, the language, to better connect my design work to business outcomes. The impact map framework helped clarify how to tell the full story of the value I bring, beyond just product metrics. Ryan made complex ideas feel approachable and useful, and I left feeling more confident in how I communicate design’s role in driving real results. I’d recommend it to any designer looking to grow their influence and get the recognition they deserve.

Learn business from a designer with real-world business expertise

For 20-years, Ryan has run multiple businesses, coached hundreds of designers, and led numerous cross-functional teams to launch some of today’s most recognizable products.

As an early employee at DoorDash, he reported to one of the company’s co-founders and led multiple 0-to-1 product launches despite complex cross-functional politics.

At Airbnb, his work was regularly reviewed by Brian Chesky. He managed dozens of stakeholders across multiple teams, using a combination of data and storytelling to get buy-in to overhaul the company’s most business-critical products, including the booking flow, messaging platform, search platform, and Host availability and pricing tools.

Ryan believes that business expertise will unlock influence and meaningful work for the next generation of Design leaders. In addition to a BA in graphic design, he earned an MBA from U.C. Berkeley's Haas School of Business, which consistently ranks among the top MBA programs in the world.
